Environmental Science Scholarships For College Students

College students planning to major in the environmental sciences have many opportunities to earn scholarships to provide assistance for their academic careers. The environmental sciences cover several majors and disciplines. These include biology, oceanography and marine sciences, hydrology, and energy-related fields. In some cases, scholarships are available only to students previously declaring an environmental sciences major, not freshmen just entering school.

Ohio Environmental Science and Environmental Engineering Scholarship Program

Students majoring in the environmental sciences and attending public or private colleges and universities in Ohio may apply for these scholarships. Sponsored by the Ohio Academy of Science, these merit-based scholarships are awarded to students in their fourth or fifth year at colleges and universities and to second-year students at two-year or technical colleges.

Calvin College

This Christian college in Michigan offers two scholarships for students majoring in environmental sciences. Enrolled Calvin College students entering their second, third or fourth years may apply for the Debra Duer Scholarship. Applicants must show financial need to qualify, along with a grade point average of 3.0 or more. The John and Lillian Van Oosten Scholarships are awarded based on academic merit and financial need.

Baylor University

This Texas university has various scholarships targeted for students in the environmental sciences. Among them are the W. Merle and Mary K. Alexander Endowment Scholarship Fund, named for a long-time professor at the school. The Catherine Ross Bolton Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund provides funding to students enrolled at Baylor University who intend to pursue ecology as a career. The Clara Yates Wieland Environmental Studies Scholarship Fund is awarded to students desirous of solving environmental problems.

Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship Program

This scholarship offered by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) is named for the former South Carolina senator. For the 2010-2011 academic year, scholarships are worth up to $8,000 per year for regular undergraduate study in the environmental sciences, along with a 10 week paid summer internship at one of NOAA's facilities. Applicants must be U.S. citizens in their sophomore years of college with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 in all classes. Students receiving the scholarship also attend a conference and present papers.
