Travel To Hawaii By Ship

Waikiki Beach on Oahu

The state of Hawaii consists of six islands: Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Maui and Hawaii's Big Island. Cruise lines travel between the mainland United States and the Hawaiian Islands throughout the year, and they offer a variety of travel options. You can visit just one individual island and stay for a short period of time, or you may choose to visit each island on your journey.

Instructions

1. Decide what time of year you want to visit. Hawaii weather is typically between 60 degrees and 80 degrees throughout the year; however, winter is a wetter, rainier season for most of the islands. During winter, the ocean's waves are also higher, which occasionally forces beaches to close due to strong undertow.

2. Decide how long you want to travel. Hawaii cruises last anywhere from seven to 22 days, depending on how many islands you want to visit and how long you want to stay on each island.

3. Decide how many islands you want to see. Each island offers a variety of tourist attractions. Kauai, the oldest Hawaiian island, is famous for Coconut Beach and its golden sand. Oahu is most commonly known for Waikiki Beach and is also where the television show "Lost" is filmed. Visitors to Molokai enjoy hiking and visiting Kalaupapa National Historical Park. The island of Lanai is very small, but hosts several beautiful golf courses. Maui is the second largest island, and contains scenic Hana highway. The Big Island is most famously known for being home to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Not all cruise lines stop at each island, so consider which stops you want to make when choosing your cruise.

4. Choose your activities. Each Hawaiian island offers many activities, such as golfing, whale watching, hiking and luaus. Some activities, such as whale watching, are only available during the winter months. Other activities, such as surfing and snorkeling, are available year-round.

5. Fill out agriculture forms. The Hawaii Department of Agriculture monitors all plants, animals and fruits that are brought into the island. Upon entering the state of Hawaii, you will be required to submit an agriculture form stating what types of agricultural items you are bringing into the state. Even if you are not bringing any applicable items, you will still be required to fill out the form. You can print this out ahead of time from the Hawaii Department of Agriculture website or your cruise director can provide you with a form.
