Professional Master'S Programs

School building

Professional master's degree programs enable working professionals to obtain their graduate degrees in the concentration of their choice, such as computer science, engineering or science, to further their educational experience within their fields.

University of Washington

The University of Washington website offers a part-time professional master's program with a concentration in computer science and engineering. Students complete eight quarters throughout the program and meet one night each week to cover such computer science topics as compiler construction, human computer interaction, principles of software engineering, database management systems, current trends in computer graphics and designing and implementing digital systems.

University of Maryland

The University of Maryland website offers a professional master's of engineering program designed to help engineers develop their careers. This part-time program offers classes during the late afternoons, evenings and online. Students study several different types of engineering, including aerospace, civil and environmental, chemical and biomolecular, electrical and computer, as well as fire protection engineering. Course topics include environmental risk analysis, computer-aided engineering analysis, network security, software engineering, thermal systems design analysis and an introduction to kinetics of reactions in materials.

Rice University

Rice University's website offers three degree concentrations within the professional science master's program: subsurface geoscience, nanoscale physics, as well as environmental analysis and decision making. All three areas of concentration offer part-time study options; the time it takes to complete this program will vary depending upon the background of the student and the amount of coursework the students completes each term. Full-time students attend a program for approximately 21 months. These programs also include hands-on training in the form of an internship. Students will take courses in geophysical data analysis, petroleum geology, methods of experimental physics, computational physics, remote sensing and quantitative environmental decision making.
