Forestry Correspondence Schools

Forestry courses don't have to be taught in a traditional classroom, but can instead be taught online.

Schools that offer correspondence or online forestry classes and degrees can be found across the U.S. and around the world. Typically, colleges willing to offer distance learning opportunities in forestry are institutions that are already strong in forestry, and are interested in expanding their profile and student base. Classes sometimes follow a traditional hard-copy correspondence model, but more often, class lectures, notes, seminars and other aspects are delivered online. Professors are consulted via email, Skype and with telephone calls, and projects are turned in and graded just as they would be with a traditional on-campus program.

University of Maryland Extension

The University of Maryland offers students a wide range of majors and course work in environmental sciences, including forestry. The University's Extension department offers a specific forestry correspondent course to help landowners and professionals who deal with forestry management understand the many issues that impact the health and use of forests, both in private and public ownership. There are no prerequisites for the the course, though having access to forests, either privately owned or public lands, is necessary to complete all of the six-part of course.

Mississippi State University

Mississippi State University offers an online Master of Science degree program that covers forestry management, forestry economics, natural resources law, natural resources policy, and forestry planning. Course work, lectures and assistance to students are offered online. Admission to this or any other distance learning degree program at Mississippi State is the same as it would be for a traditional program of learning on campus.

University of Georgia Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources

The Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources is expanding its distance learning programs, but the first correspondence forestry course the school offered was Outdoor Recreation and Environmental Awareness. The University of Georgia offers a nationally credited forestry curriculum and is considered among the top forestry programs in the U.S.

University of Cumbria: National School of Forestry

England's University of Cumbria, which contains the National School of Forestry and Centre for Wildlife Conservation, has an online program for students seeking a Master of Science degree in Forest Ecosystem Management. Students from all over the world can earn their degrees through distance learning. The master's program typically lasts around 30 months, with the last six months devoted to the research and preparation of a dissertation by the student.
