Online Geoscience Degrees

Geoscience is concerned with the Earth and its resources.

Geoscientists study the Earth, its environment and its resources. Various career options are available to individuals who pursue degrees in this field of study. Geoscience majors can work as teachers or research scientists, depending upon which area their degree program emphasizes. Some schools now offer online degrees in this field of study.

Northwest Missouri State University

Northwest Missouri State University offers an online Master of Science in Geographic Information Science. The program is primarily designed for those working in government or the business sector in a capacity that utilizes the technologies of geographic information systems (GIS). The program focuses on various aspects of GIS utilization such as geostatistics, GIS modeling, project management, database design and cartography. The program requires the completion of a total of 32 credit hours in the field, 21 of which are core courses. Nine hours of electives are chosen by the student. Students must also complete a master's thesis as part of the program. The program can usually be completed in about two years. Western Governors Unviersity

Western Governors University (WGU) offers an online geosciences degree in the field of education. Students can pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Science with an emphasis in teaching geoscience in grades 5-12. WGU differs from traditional colleges and universities offering online degrees in that students move through the program based on the development of competency in each subject rather than simply completing a required number of credit hours. The program takes four to five years to complete for incoming freshman students. Transfer students can expect to complete the program in about two to three years, depending upon the number of credits they have already achieved at another institution. Students take courses in Integrated Natural Sciences, Earth and Space Science Theories and Concepts and Specific Teaching Practices: Science Pedagogy.
