Many of Pennsylvania's top colleges and universities offer programs in environmental and earth sciences. Students can work toward undergraduate degrees and master's and doctoral degrees in a variety of fields within environmental studies. These degree programs prepare students for professional careers in environmental fields.
University of Pennsylvania Department of Earth and Environmental Science
The University of Pennsylvania's Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Undergraduates can work toward the B.S. (Bachelor of Science) degree with majors in environmental studies or earth sciences and concentrations in environmental policy, global environmental systems, sustainability, geology, paleobiology and more. The department also offers graduate programs leading toward master's and doctoral degrees, including M.S. (Master of Science) degrees in environmental studies and applied geosciences and Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy) degrees with concentrations in biogeochemistry, environmental geology, oceanography, tectonics and more. Penn's faculty in the department conducts extensive research in four main areas, including earth, ecology and ecosystems; environmental toxicology; environmental engineering and environmental policy. The University of Pennsylvania tied for fourth in U.S. News and World Report's 2010 ranking of national universities.

The Behrend College School of Science
Pennsylvania State University's Erie location, known as The Behrend College, offers environmental studies within the School of Science. Undergraduates can work toward a Bachelor of Science degree in environmental studies. The program prepares students for careers in a variety of environmental fields. The Behrend College was founded in 1948, and as of 2009 it had about 4,800 students.

Bryn Mawr College Environmental Studies Concentration
Bryn Mawr College is an all-female liberal arts college located near Philadelphia. Undergraduates can complete a concentration in environmental studies in collaboration with one of several other majors, including anthropology, biology, chemistry, geology, political science and more. Students must complete six courses to finish the concentration, including four required courses and two electives. Seniors must complete an independent research project or thesis on topics of their choice. Bryn Mawr College tied for 25th in U.S. News and World Report's 2010 ranking of liberal arts colleges.

Swarthmore College Environmental Studies
Swarthmore College is a small liberal arts college located near Philadelphia. The college offers an interdisciplinary environmental studies major that encompasses natural sciences, social science, engineering and the humanities. Students must complete five required courses and a capstone seminar in the second semester of the senior year. The program gives full credit to students for environmental study abroad programs in a variety of countries, including Brazil, Costa Rica and Thailand. Swarthmore also sponsors its own environmental study programs in Poland and South Africa. Swarthmore College was ranked third in U.S. News and World Report's 2010 ranking of liberal arts colleges.
