Getting Free Scholarships In France

Studying at one of France's most prestigious institutes can be cheaper than you think.


Many people would love to be whisked away to France where they could study the language, history and culture of the French people. That dream is closer than you think if you've already began pursuing an undergraduate, graduate or postgraduate degree that can be related to France or French culture. Some scholarship programs offer money for Americans to study abroad in the subject of their choosing, while others give grants to Americans who are specifically majoring in French.


Instructions


1. Become a teaching assistant and spend up to 12 hours a week teaching French. In exchange for your work, the French Embassy will provides you a monthly stipend of 780 euros.


2. Apply for a Chateaubriand Fellowship if you plan to study history, political science, philosophy, film, French literature or the arts in France. You will have to either work under a researcher or attend certain seminars that are held at various universities in France. The fellowship program is open to people who are pursuing a Ph.D. in various areas of the Social Sciences or Humanities. A letter of recommendation, followed by an invitation, are needed to apply (see Resources below).


3. Apply for generic study abroad programs that will (partially or fully) fund your semester or year in France. Some of these scholarships include the Gilman Scholarships, National Security Education Program, Rotary Foundation and the AIFS Summer Study Abroad International Scholarships (see Resources below).


4. Apply for the Eiffel Doctorate Scholarship program if you plan to study in France after you've obtained your degree. Most of these scholarships are allotted to those studying the sciences, law, international relations and economics. The award gives you approximately 1,400 euros a month, and also covers a few other expenses (see Resources below).


5. Apply for the Dan Wise Memorial Scholarship if you are currently enrolled in one of the University of California schools, such as UCLA, UC Berkeley or UC Irvine. The scholarship allots $5,000 for a student to spend a year studying abroad in France. Check with your school's study abroad office for details.


6. Apply for the Pierre C. Fraley Scholarship (afphila.com) if you plan to pursue an undergraduate degree in French. The award allots $2,500 for a summer program that is completed in either the United States, France or another country, as long as it's approved by the scholarship committee.


7. Apply for one of four scholarships that the Institut Français de Washington offers (www.unc.edu/depts/institut/Institut/Welcome.html), including the Gilbert Chinard Historical Prize, Edouard Morot-Sir Pedagogical Prize, Gilbert Chinard Research Fellowship and Harmon Chadbourn Rorison Fellowship. These scholarships emphasize that students learn about and study the French culture, language and history. Some awards involve a great deal of writing.


8. Apply for France University of Grenoble's Ph.D. Scholarship if you have already obtained your master's degree and plan to pursue a doctoral degree (http://scholarship-positions.com/france-university-of-grenoble-phd-scholarship-2008/2008/08/28/).
