A Post-9/11 GI Bill is available to former and current members of the United States military to help them pay for a college education. According to GIBill.com: "Effective August 1, 2009, the Post-9/11 GI Bill is among the most comprehensive education benefit programs veterans and active-duty servicemembers have ever had." Students must choose a school that is approved by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to receive this funding. Schools and universities across the U.S. accept the GI Bill.
Trinity University
Located in San Antonio, Texas, Trinity University is a private university that accepts the Post-9/11 GI Bill and has liberal arts and professional programs available. Undergraduate students can work toward a Bachelor of Arts, a Bachelor of Music or a Bachelor of Science degree with majors in areas such as English, history, drama, art, psychology and music. Minors are available in areas such as communication, biomathematics, African-American studies, cognitive science, management, new media and film studies. Graduate degree programs that are available include school administration, Master of Science in accounting, Master of Arts in teaching, Master of Arts in psychology and health care administration.
Southern Maine Community College
Southern Maine Community College in South Portland is approved by the VA and accepts the Post-9/11 GI Bill. Career and technical programs can prepare students for a career and build a foundation for more education. Programs include nursing, radiation technology, construction, automotive technology, emergency medical services and surgical technology; they generally take one to two years to complete. Many degree credits can be transferred to a university or four-year school after completing the program, and students can then work in their career field while continuing their education. A liberal studies program is available for students who wish to start their first two years of education at a community college, and later transfer to a four-year college. Online classes are another option for students and includes learning through email, the Internet and CDs.
Harris-Stowe State University
Harris-Stowe State University (HSSU), in St. Louis, Missouri, accepts the Post-9/11 GI Bill. Students can choose from 12 Bachelor of Science degree programs. At the HSSU Anheuser-Busch School of Business, students have the option of studying health care management, information sciences and computer technology, accounting, hospitality and tourism management and business administration. General education studies will prepare students for a professional degree program. Teacher education programs include early childhood education, secondary education, elementary education and teacher certifications. Urban specialization programs are available in criminal justice, professional interdisciplinary studies and urban education. Academic advisers are available at the school to assist students in choosing degree programs and transferring credits.
Dixie State College of Utah
Dixie State College of Utah is approved by the VA to accept the Post-9/11 GI Bill and is located in St. George. A fine arts division offers programs in art, music, dance and theater. Dixie State College of Utah's School of Education offers a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education, an Associate of Applied Science in early childhood education and an Associate of Arts or Associate of Science in early childhood education. Dixie State College of Utah's School of Science and Technology has programs available in physical sciences, engineering, geology, physics, biology, mathematics and automotive technology. Students interested in health care can study at the School of Nursing and Allied Health to prepare for a career as a nurse, respiratory therapist, dental hygienist, physical therapy assistant or surgical technologist.
