Queens College Masters Programs


Queens College (or QC) is the largest part of the City University of New York (CUNY) school system and was founded in 1937. Based in Flushing, New York, the school offers both undergraduate and graduate degree programs. New York residents pay just over $7,000 a year for graduate studies, while out-of-state and international students pay $575 per credit hour.


Division of Social Sciences


Queens College offers a Master of Science in Accounting and Information Systems. This program is 30 credits long, and also offers a special curriculum for students who did not earn an accounting undergraduate degree.


Students interested in sociology can complete a Master of Arts in Sociology that is made up of 30 credit hours. One research project is required and one internship is optional.


Thirty-six credit hours are required for the Master of Library Science. Certificates can be completed in addition to the degree requirements that concentrate on children and young adult services, archives, records management and preservation. Students with a New York State Teaching Certificate can also complete a Master of Library Science-School Media Specialist degree that also requires 36 credit hours.


The Master of Arts in History consists of 30 credit hours, plus a thesis.


For a Master of Arts in Urban Studies, you must complete 30 credit hours, which includes four required courses.


Division of Arts and Humanities


Students interested in linguistics can earn a Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics through a program of 36 credits. Also within the Department of Linguistics and Communication Disorders is a Master of Arts in Speech-Language Pathology that requires 48 to 54 semester hours and 12 to 14 practicum hours for four consecutive semesters.


The art history program is 30 credit hours long, and culminates in a Master of Arts in Art History. Twenty-four credit hours must be taken in art history and the other six credit hours can be electives. There is also a Master of Fine Arts in Studio Arts available that requires 54 credits.


The Aaron Copland School of Music offers a Master of Arts in Music with concentrations in composition, musicology or theory; classical performance; and jazz performance.


The Master of Arts in English Literature is comprised of 30 credit hours and a thesis. The English department at QC also offers a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing and Literary Translation. This program has 36 credit hours and offers a track in creative writing and one in literary translation.


A student seeking a Master of Arts in either French or Italian, as part of the Division of European Languages and Literatures, must complete 30 credit hours with at least 24 credit hours in the major language. The last six credits may be taken in another language that is not English.


QC also has a Department of Hispanic Languages and Literatures, which offers a Master of Arts in Spanish.


Division of Mathematics and Natural Sciences


The Master of Arts in Biology degree can be completed two ways: through 24 course credits and six thesis credits or 32 course credits. Those interested in chemistry and biochemistry can choose to complete a Master of Arts degree with a concentration in either chemistry or biochemistry. Each concentration requires at least 30 credit hours. QC also offers a Master of Arts in Physics degree, which covers 30 credit hours that include four four-credit required courses.


The Master of Arts in Pure Mathematics also requires 30 credit hours, and the school offers a Master of Arts with a concentration in Applied Mathematics as well that requires 30 credit hours in mathematics and other approved fields.


The Master of Science in Nutrition and Exercise Sciences has three specializations. Students can choose to specialize in a curriculum that combines nutrition and exercise sciences, or can choose to specialize in nutrition or exercise sciences. All three specializations require 36 credit hours.


Students in the Master of Arts in Computer Science degree program must complete 30 credit hours in courses covering software, theoretical foundations, hardware, and mathematical applications and algorithms.


The Master of Arts in Geology degree requires a total of 30 credit hours, of which 18 must be completed in residence at the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences. Students also must complete a thesis.


For those interested in psychology, students have the option of a Master of Arts in Psychology (30 credit hours and a thesis, or 36 credit hours without the thesis), Master of Arts in Behavioral Neuroscience (37 credit hours) and Master of Arts in Applied Behavior Analysis (22 credit hours of courses and 15 credit hours of thesis research or electives).


Division of Education


Within the Division of Education, students can complete a Master of Arts in Teaching or a Master of Science in Education degree. The programs culminating in a Master of Arts in Teaching are Childhood Education; Childhood Education, Bilingual Extension; and Early Childhood Education. For a Master of Science in Education, you can choose from Adolescent Education (with concentrations in biology, chemistry, earth science, English, French, Italian, mathematics, physics, social studies and Spanish; Childhood Education and Childhood Education with Bilingual Extension; Counselor Education, Early Childhood Education; Literacy Teacher (concentrations in birth through grade six and grades five through 12); Music Education; Physical Education; School Psychologist; Teacher of Special Education (specializations in birth through grade two, grades one through six and grades seven through 12); and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.
