Learning Physical Science

Learning any form of science requires students to combine observational skills with mathematics and memorization. Physical science teaches students about how the world around them works, such as how matter is created and the effects gravity has upon motion. An education in physical science requires first learning the basics, then combining the basics to learn more complex lessons and finally developing the skills needed to analyze what has been learned.

Basics

Begin with the basics of physical science. This includes learning about the states of matter (solid, liquid, gas). You will also need to explore measurement, characteristics of mass and differences between weight and density. These lessons can be learned through reading textbooks or by using online activities (see Resources). After learning the basics of matter, you will move on to learning about force and motion of matter. This will build on the previous lessons and will be used in your future education.

Putting It Together

After learning about matter, it is time to apply that knowledge to more advanced lessons. This is where you will investigate the periodic table of elements, and how these elements are combined to form the building blocks of all matter. Learning the properties of matter will allow you to identify unknown substances by examining common characteristics between known substances such as boiling point, density and chemical reactions. Keeping in the theme of putting pieces together, you will also want to expand your knowledge of motion to learn how machinery works. This includes learning how simple machines combine to perform larger tasks as well as how forces such as gravity affect the motion of matter.

Advanced

The most advanced physical science lessons involve the structures of atoms. This is where you will learn about chemical bonds, the differences between protons, neutrons and electrons and how their position within an atom determines the element being created. The beginning steps toward an education in physics will also take place, with motion and forces being predicted and described using equations where factors can be altered to produce differing results.
