Certificate Courses In Engineering

Students can boost their career prospects with an engineering certificate.

Prospective engineering students can choose from undergraduate or graduate certificate programs in their field of interest. Undergraduate programs allow students to complement their major concentration and graduate programs allow students who already have a degree to enhance their career prospects. For those who cannot attend full-time, certain universities offer online certificates.

University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign

The University of Illinois offers an online certificate program in the area of Environmental and Water Resources Engineering. The certificate is aimed at professional engineers who wish to gain a qualification in this particular area. Students study via online streaming and the certificate may be counted towards a graduate degree. Admission requirements include a previous bachelor's degree in engineering with a minimum of a 3.0 Grade Point Average (GPA) in the last 60 hours of the degree. Alternatively, extensive experience in the field with a documented history of passing courses in physics, fluid mechanics and differential equations math may suffice.

University of Massachusetts-Lowell

The University of Massachusetts-Lowell offers a range of graduate certificates in engineering. The certificate fields include four different certificates in Electrical and Computer Engineering, seven certificates in Mechanical Engineering, eight certificates in Plastics Engineering, three certificates in Chemical Engineering and three in Civil Engineering. Some of the programs are interdepartmental. Certificates constitute up to 12 to 14 credits and some certificates are flexib le in design to suit student's needs. The courses necessary must be completed within five years with a GPA of 3.0 or above to pass. Students must have a baccalaureate degree prior to admission. Most course credits can apply toward further education.

Princeton University

For students who wish to earn a certificate at the same time as pursuing an undergraduate degree, Princeton offer engineering programs in certain fields. These fields include Engineering and Management Systems, Engineering Biology, Engineering Physics, Geological Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Sustainable Energy, and Architecture and Engineering. Prospective engineering students should have a strong academic record in math, physics and natural sciences along with other prerequisites such as English, a foreign language, social studies and history. Princeton also provides grants and campus jobs to students who cannot afford tuition.

University of Wisconsin-Madison

The University of Wisconsin-Madison offers undergraduate certificates in engineering to complement an engineering major. These programs include traditional engineering subjects, but the university also offers certificates in the areas of technical communication and Japanese studies. The Japanese language certificate prepares students for interaction with Japanese engineers and teaches Japanese reading and writing skills. The technical communications certificate teaches students to communicate engineering concepts clearly and efficiently in a work environment. These programs require 24 to 27 credits to complete.
