Diamonds have long been associated with relationships and as gifts of love. The beauty, clarity and sparkle of natural diamonds has been simulated with man-made technology. Although natural and synthetic stones look similar, there are differences. Does this Spark an idea?
History
Historically, diamonds were mined in India over 3000 years ago. In contrast, General Electric invented man-made diamonds in the mid-1900s, but they were very costly to manufacture. Eventually Genesis invented a cheaper way to create them, allowing them to be marketed.
Traditional Perceptions
Natural diamonds were initially valued for their beauty and used as protection against evil spirits. Later, they were used to help heal. In the Middle Ages they finally became prized for their worth. Synthetic diamonds appear to be valued for their diamond-like qualities and appearance.
Creation
It takes millions of years for natural diamonds to be created when carbon is subjected to high temperatures and pressure under the earth. Synthetics are also created when carbon reacts to similar pressures and high temperatures, but over a short period of time. Natural diamonds have to be mined, shaped and shined, but synthetics are created looking like the finished product.
Uses
Both synthetic and natural diamonds are used primarily for industrial uses. However, they are commonly used for decorative purposes and jewelry as well.
Cost
Natural diamonds are the most costly gemstones, but synthetics are a third cheaper than comparable natural diamonds.
Appearance
Natural diamonds have been found in a variety of colors and some diamonds even have black flecks. Synthetic stones can also be created in different colors. Synthetic diamonds have fewer imperfections than mined diamonds.
