Water Resources Degrees

The study of water management often happens in areas where water plays an important role.

The study of water resources is an interdisciplinary pursuit that often takes either a scientific course or a management and policy course. Universities that offer programs in this area of study are often those in states or areas where water resources are especially important, such as in deserts or agricultural areas that depend on watersheds. The universities offer graduate, and sometimes doctorate and undergraduate programs.

University of New Mexico

The University of New Mexico's water resources program offers a master's degree in water resources designed to prepare students for careers in water management. The program has a hydroscience track and a policy and management track. The hydroscience track is appropriate for students with a technical background while the policy and management track is designed for students with diverse backgrounds from law and economics to natural sciences. The program at the University of New Mexico is designed to train students in the varied and widely diverse arena of water resources, especially for arid areas.

Villanova University

The College of Engineering at Villanova University in Pennsylvania offers a wholly online degree in water resources. This is a graduate program designed for students who require a distance learning education. Students have access to lectures and communication tools online as they work toward their degree. This program is comparable to the in-class master's of water resources the university also offers. This program is best for students who have an undergraduate degree in engineering or applied science. The in-class program offers all of its courses in the evening to accommodate students who work during the day.

Colorado State University

Colorado State University offers several graduate degrees in the area of water resources spread over several of its colleges. The colleges of agricultural sciences, engineering and natural resources all offer extensive water resource programs in conjunction with the agricultural experiment Station, cooperative extension and the Colorado Water Resources Research Institute. There are also water-related graduate degrees available through the colleges of civil engineering, fishery and wildlife biology, Earth resources and chemical and bioresource engineering. All of these departments also offer water resource-related undergraduate degrees.

Oregon State University

Oregon State University offers master's and doctorate programs in water resources. This school is the flagship university in Oregon for this type of degree. The graduate programs are focused on science, engineering or policy and management, with doctorate programs in science and engineering. Twelve programs over six colleges at the university support disciplines within this degree area. This program offers many opportunities for research, and students benefit from access to a nationally recognized staff and guest lecturers from around the world.
