While oceans are vast, they also hold delicate ecosystems that need to be scientifically understood to be properly protected. Several schools offer online degree programs and courses addressing oceanography and marine science. You gain knowledge and skills that can be applied in business and industry, education, tourism and public policy.


Bachelor of Science in Oceanography


The University of West Florida offers an online Bachelor of Science degree in oceanography. An interdisciplinary program involving the departments of biology and environmental studies, the curriculum addresses the biology, chemistry, geology and physiology of oceans. Major coursework includes coastal and marine environments, biogeochemical cycles, climate change, atmospheric interactions, coral reefs and remote sensing of oceans. Prerequisite courses include biology, ecology, chemistry, geology, physics, statistics and marine biology. You can submit applications in the fall, spring or summer. You can also take courses individually by enrolling as a non-degree student.

Bachelor of Arts in Maritime Studies


The University of West Florida also offers a Bachelor of Arts in maritime studies designed to educate students in the cultural and natural resources of oceans. Coursework includes geology, geography, coastal and marine environments, oceanography, maritime history, international law and environmental resource management. You also have the opportunity to participate in an archaeological field survey or a professional internship.

Masters of Science in Coastal Zone Management


Nova Southeastern University offers a Master of Science in coastal zone management designed for both working professionals and college graduates who wish to gain expertise in oceanography. Applicants must hold an undergraduate degree with a major or concentration in a scientific subject with a major GPA of 2.75 or better. You must complete the Graduate Record Examination with verbal and quantitative scores of 40% or higher and submit three reference letters. Coursework includes biostatistics, coastal ecology, physical oceanography, marine chemistry and marine geology. You also have the option of attending field courses in Australia, the Bahamas, the Florida Keys or Belize.

Graduate Certificate in Coastal Studies or Marine and Coastal Climate Change


Nova Southeastern University also offers two graduate certificates through distance education. The graduate certificate in coastal studies addresses ecological and socio-environmental issues affecting oceans and coastal zones. The certificate in marine and coastal climate change focuses on the impacts of climate change on the ecology and the socioeconomic environment of marine and coastal zones from national and international perspectives. You must hold an undergraduate degree in any subject. Students may apply their credits toward a Master of Science in coastal zone management or a Master of Arts in cross-disciplinary studies that can be earned online.
