Multimedia Educational Games For Kids

Build your own planet with a game on the Kids Know It Network.

The Internet provides a wealth of educational games for kids. Interactive games teach children how the human body works, identify geologic rock categories and even about the solar system. Kids can play astronomy hangman, partake in a spelling bee with a robot in real time or create a colorful fireworks display online. Whether the subject is grammar, math, music or science, there are online games available, for free, to strengthen those skills.

Math and Science Games

Take a virtual tour of the solar system at the Kids Know It Network.

The Kids Know It Network offers free multimedia games for a range of math and science topics. It hosts approximately 40 math games, including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, some of which have timed problems, as well as math games based on telling time, money exchanges, fractions and algebra. The science games include astronomy hangman, crossword and word-search puzzles, as well as games that allow players to create their own planets and solar systems, a "virtual star explorer" and a collection of video games such as "Lunar Lander." The site also has games to create or mutate dinosaurs, identify geologic rock categories and take a tour of human anatomy, in addition to animal biology games. Lumosity offers a free math game called Raindrops, which has addition, subtraction, multiplication and division problems falling in raindrops. Students answer the problems before the raindrops hit the ground, and they begin to drop faster with time. This game scores correct answers and how well the player did under pressure.

English Games

Kids can play MadLibs online at FunBrain.

Enchanted Learning has a selection of Word Wheels, which are templates for paper wheels students can make to learn to make words from standard letter combinations. For example, a wheel with the letters "en" on it can spin to combine with other letters, making words such as hen and when. FunBrain offers online MadLibs, which allow players to enter different types of words, such as nouns and adverbs, and then combine them to make a funny story using the chosen words in a prescribed format. FunBrain also offers interactive English games such as the Grammar Gorillas, Spellaroo and the Plural Girls. Merriam-Webster's Word Central offers an Alpha-bot spelling bee game, as well as Robo-Bee, which is a game about antonyms, synonyms, spelling and grammar usage, and Jumble Kids, a word-scramble game. You can also find animated word and grammar games at Some School Games.

Music and Art Games

Learn to identify musical instruments by sound at Music Tech Teacher.

Music Tech Teacher hosts online games about music theory, famous composers, rhythms, intervals, scales, chords, music notes, careers and terminology. The site includes worksheets, quiz and puzzle templates to print out and also has online games such as Bass Clef Baseball, Identify the Instrument and Jazz Musicians Trivia. A Lifetime of Color has games with themes of color and design. The site has games that allow you to create your own architecture, introduce line, shape and color concepts, along with engineering games dealing with everyday items. Crayola Crayons also has interactive art games. The Fireworks Spectacular game lets a child program his own fireworks show online and the Paper Flower Garden games allows children to plant a planned garden then watch it grow. There are games with holiday themes too, such as the Spring Decor-egg-er, the Snowman Builder and the Monster Mixer.
