Scholarships & Grants For Minority Students

Among the most common scholarships are those designated for underrepresented groups. Programs seeking to expand opportunities for these groups and add more diversity to college campuses abound. You'll still need to meet academic and other criteria to qualify, though.

Adelante Fund Scholarship

Sponsored by MillerCoors, Adelante Fund Scholarships help Hispanic students cover the cost of college. You must be a high school junior or senior with at least a 3.0 GPA to qualify. If you receive a scholarship, you must be a full-time student. Two national awards are available, both worth $3,000 as of 2010. You must plan to major in international business, general business, economics, finance, accounting, marketing, public relations, general communications or sales to receive the MillerCoors National scholarship. If you're planning to major in electrical or mechanical engineering, computer science or biochemistry, apply for the MillerCoors Engineering & Sciences scholarship.

The Earl G. Graves Scholarship

Administered by the NAACP, the Earl G. Graves Scholarship is worth $5,000 as of January 2011. You must be a business major and in the top 20 percent of your class to be eligible. Only full-time students are considered. Graduate students accepted to an accredited business school also are eligible to apply.

HBCU Scholarship

Students accepted to a historically black college or university can apply for the HBCU scholarship. The scholarship award is $2,000 as of January 2011 and is awarded to students with demonstrated financial need. Active members of the NAACP are given priority. You need a minimum 2.5 GPA to receive the full scholarship award. If you win but don't attend school full time, your award can be reduced by 50 percent.

Shell Incentive Fund

As of January 2011, Shell offers a scholarship of $5,000 to underrepresented students majoring in geology, geophysics or physics; or chemical, civil, electrical, mechanical, petroleum, geological, or geophysical engineering. Shell defines underrepresented as a student who is Black, Hispanic/Latino, American Indian or Alaskan Native. You must have a minimum 3.2 grade point average and maintain it throughout the duration of the scholarship term. Scholarship money can be used to pay for tuition or living expenses.
