Make A Homemade Volcano Project Your Kids Will Love

Make a model of a real volcano using simple household ingredients.

You can make volcano projects with your children as part of a school assignment or just for fun. Wear old clothing when you construct a volcano because the simulated lava can make a mess. You'll be using simple household products to create the right chemical reaction. Make sure you have a camera ready if this is your child's first experience with making a volcano.

Instructions

1. Shape a piece of cardboard or heavy-duty poster board into a cone shape. Next, insert a 4-oz. cup into the top of the cone to make the crater of the volcano. Stand up and attach the cone onto a baking sheet or large piece of wood.

2. Cover the cone with Plaster of Paris. Make sure you plaster it all the way down to the base, adding extra support for the cone. Avoid getting any in the cup. Let the cone dry completely. Then paint and decorate the cone to look like a real volcano.

3. Mix 1/2 cup of vinegar with 1 tsp. of dish washing liquid. You can add little red food coloring to give it a little extra flare. Put the vinegar mixture into the crater.

4. Add 1 tbsp. of baking soda to the vinegar mixture when you are ready to view the eruption.
