State Facts About New York

New York is located in the Northeastern United States.


Known as the Empire State because of its great wealth and resources, New York is bustling with industry ranging from agriculture to manufacturing, publishing and finance, and the state's diverse geography ranges from mountains to beaches.


Basic Facts and Population


Albany is the capital of New York, and the state is divided into 62 counties. 2009 census data estimates that New York ranks third in population with roughly 19,541,453 inhabitants.


History


Originally settled by the Dutch in 1624, New York was under British rule from 1664 until the American Revolution. In 1788, New York became the eleventh state in the Union. In 1789, George Washington was inaugurated as the first president of the United States in New York City, and the city served as the nation's first capital.


Geography


New York borders Canada, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, and major bodies of water adjoining the state include the Atlantic Ocean, Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. The highest point in the state is Mt. Marcy at 5,344 feet and the lowest is sea level where the state borders the ocean. The state covers more than 47,000 square miles and ranks 30th in size among other U.S. states.
