What Counties Make Up Northeast Ohio

Ohio is the seventh most populated state in the United States, with a 2009 census tally of 10,847,115 people counted. Ohio was the seventeenth state to join the Union, and the state flag holds 17 stars as a reminder. The state capitol of Ohio is Columbus, which is in the centrally located county of Franklin. Of the 88 counties in Ohio, approximately 14 of them are located in northeast Ohio.


Northernmost Counties


The eastern counties situated farthest north in Ohio are Lake, Ashtabula, Geauga, Cuyahoga, and Lorain.


Easternmost Counties


The northern counties located farthest east in Ohio are Trumbull, Portage, Mahoning, Columbiana, Stark, Summit, Medina, Wayne, and Ashland.


Biggest Declining County Population


Cleveland has the waterfront.


In 2007, Cuyahoga County had the third largest population decline nationally, with a loss of 13,304. A bigger look at the population figures for Cuyahoga County show that from 2000 to 2009, it experienced a total decline of 118,269. However, Cuyahoga County remains the most populated county in Ohio, with almost 1.5 million people. Cuyahoga County is home to Cleveland, which boasts the Lake Erie waterfront.


Large Cities in Northeastern Counties of Ohio


According to 2005 figures, Cleveland (Cuyahoga County) is the most populous city in northeastern Ohio, with a population of 452,208. Other populous cities in the northeastern counties of Ohio include Akron, population 210,795 (Summit County), Youngstown, population 81,460 (Mahoning County), and Canton, population 79,478 (Stark County).
