If you're considering a career as an accountant, you may be interested to know the United States Department of Labor projects a continued 10-year rise of 22 percent of employment for accountants. Becoming an accountant takes specialized education and training, starting with a minimum of a bachelor's degree. If you prefer to learn from home, many colleges across the country offer online degrees in accounting. Before enrolling, check a school's accreditation. The accreditation process shows a college's continued commitment to its students' education.


Rasmussen College


Earn a bachelor's degree in accounting online from Rasmussen College. Topics of study in the four-year program include introduction to business, accounting information systems, corporate-fraud examination, accounting, computer-focused principles, strategic management, advanced federal tax theory, money and banking, financial statement analysis and auditing. Students must also complete general education classes such as ethics, introduction to communication, macroeconomics, introduction to geology and college algebra.


Students may appreciate knowing that Rasmussen reports 97 percent of its graduates are employed. Applicants must have a high-school diploma or GED. SAT and ACT scores are not required. All students must take an entrance exam. An Internet connection and email address are required. Other software and hardware essentials are dictated to students per class. Rasmussen is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.

University of Connecticut


Build on your accounting bachelor's degree with a master of science degree in accounting from the University of Connecticut. The online degree is the first online master's program at the university. Course work includes taxation of business entities, global financial reporting and analysis, evaluating internal controls, financial planning for accounting professionals, contemporary managerial accounting issues, advanced assurance services and forensic accounting and securities fraud. The program may be completed within a year if you devote yourself to studies full time.


The university is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, rated as the premier accrediting agency for master's programs in accounting. Applicants must have a bachelor's degree (any field) with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 and a GMAT score of at least 500. Students who do not have an undergraduate major in accounting must show coursework in managerial accounting, cost accounting, auditing, federal income tax and financial accounting. A resume and six short essays are also required. Each course provides a list of required software programs and hardware essentials. Students must have an Internet connection, speakers, sound card and email address to begin.

Capella University


Students who intend to teach accounting or who want to build on their undergraduate and graduate studies may be interested in Capella University's online Ph.D. in accounting degree. The program, which affords up to seven years for completion, includes ethics and social responsibility, fraud examination, forensic accounting, management theory creation, applied enterprise economics, international accounting, accounting information systems, quantitative research techniques and survey of applied research methods. All students will complete a dissertation and comprehensive examination before being awarded their Ph.D.


Capella has received accreditation from The Higher Learning Commission. Applicants may be interested to know that Capella provides financial aid to 78 percent of its students. Candidates must have a master's degree (any major) with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0.
