Students can study aquatic mammals like whales, dolphins and porpoises in depth by choosing marine science or marine biology undergraduate programs at New Jersey colleges and universities. Students interested in marine mammalogy can matriculate into Stockton’s Marine Science program. The college offers both Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts degrees in Marine Science.

Fairleigh Dickinson University
Established in 1942, Fairleigh Dickinson University is the largest private university in the state. The university’s Metropolitan Campus in Teaneck hosts a Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology program. The four-year program’s curriculum combines lectures with a heavy emphasis on fieldwork. Students take general education courses in English, history and mathematics, in addition to a rigorous load of general science courses. Marine biology courses are introduced in later semesters, and include tropical marine vegetation, physiology of marine animals and tropical marine ecology. The program also features a research component that allows students to gain field experience.

Established in 1766, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is a public research university with three campuses throughout the state of New Jersey. Students interested in pursuing studies in marine science can matriculate into Rutgers’ Bachelor of Science in Marine Sciences program within the Institute of Marine & Coastal Science.
