The Indian Institute of Technology, or IIT, was established in 1946 and is the organization that oversees higher education technical institutions for India. Seeking to pattern advanced technological schools after European and North American engineering universities, IIT established several universities that emphasized top graduates and engaged in research and development as well. Today's most elite Indian engineering schools offer undergraduate and graduate degrees in some of the most competitive engineering fields.
IIT Mumbai
Located in Powai, IIT Mumbai trains engineers from all over India and also welcomes international students from more than 20 countries. Established in 1958, ITT Mumbai is usually ranked as one of the top three engineering schools in the country. The school offers degrees in several engineering disciplines, including civil engineering, chemical engineering, physics and metallurgical engineering and materials science.

IIT Kanpur
When ITT Kanpur was first established in the early 1960s, it received technical assistance from a dozen leading engineering schools in the United States and Europe. This premier institution blends instruction and research in several engineering disciplines, including aerospace engineering, computer science, chemical engineering and mechanical engineering. The university is home to just over 2,000 undergraduate students and about 1,500 graduate students.

IIT Kharagpur
Established in 1951, this institution soon earned the official status as an Institute of National Importance by the Parliament of India. The campus is spread over 2,100 acres and enrolls approximately 2,700 students. Departments include biotechnology, architecture and regional planning, cryogenic engineering, geology and geophysics, and industrial engineering and management.
