Use ArcView GIS to display spatial relationships.
ArcView GIS 3.2 tutorials are key learning opportunities for users to begin working with spatial data. Geographic Information Systems, or GIS, is a comprehensive system of computer software programs, personnel, data and hardware that allows you to display, manipulate, analyze and print spatial data. ESRI makes the ArcView GIS software.
Instructions
Start
1. Start the ArcView GIS 3.2 software by double-clicking the ArcView icon on your computer's desktop.
2. Click the option to begin your new ArcView project "as a blank project." ArcView projects have an .apr file extension.
3. Double-click the "View" button to add a blank, empty view in your project. You are now ready to add data, or themes, to your map project. Themes come in one of three data types: lines, polygons and points; examples of these data types are roads, national boundaries and cities.
Themes
4. Click the "Add Theme" button, shown as a black "plus sign" on the ArcView GIS 3.2 toolbar. It will bring up the "Add Theme" navigation screen.
5. Navigate to the "esri\esridata" directory to load data that comes with ArcView GIS 3.2. Click a polygon theme such as a national or state boundary to identify the geographical location of your map and click "OK" to add the theme to your view. The boundary theme now appears in the Table of Contents pane on the left side of ArcView GIS 3.2.
6. Click the "Add Theme" button again to add roads, which is a line theme. Click the "Add Theme" button again to add cities to your view. Click the check box for each of the boundary, roads and cities files that appear in the Table of Contents pane on the left side of ArcView 3.2. Click the check box to turn on each theme.
Symbology
7. Change the ArcView GIS 3.2 symbology, or how each theme is drawn, by double-clicking the theme in the Table of Contents. You can alter polygon themes by adding, changing or removing the "fill" or inside color of the polygons and adjusting the line thickness, color and style of the outside line. Modify the outside line of the polygon by increasing or decreasing the line weight, color and style of the line.
8. Change the line theme by double-clicking it in the Table of Contents. Line themes are changed in a similar manner to the outside line of polygons.
9. Double-click the cities theme to change its symbology .Color, style and size are three common symbology changes.
Modify
10. Redefine your theme's visible view by clicking on it in the Table of Contents, then clicking Theme from the menu and selecting Properties. This allows you to put in a definition query in the Query Builder window. You can also change your theme names and labeling options under the Properties menu.
11. Change the order your themes are drawn by clicking them in the Table of Contents and moving up or down. ArcView GIS 3.2 draws themes in ascending order. Polygons are normally drawn first with lines next and points drawn last.
12. Zoom into or out of the map by clicking on the Zoom In or Zoom Out buttons. Other zoom buttons are available to focus the map on selected features or active themes.
Layout
13. Click the "View" menu in the ArcView GIS 3.2 toolbar and select Layout. This combines all the views, tables, table and charts into one layout for printing.
14. Click the "Text" icon on the "Layout Toolbar" to add an appropriate title to your map. Click the "View Frame" button to add a scale bar. Change the scale bar by double-clicking to bring up the "Scale Bar Properties" window.
15. Click the "View Frame" button to add a legend to the map. Resize the legend if necessary and move it to an appropriate location on the layout. Add a North arrow to the map by clicking the "View Frame" button and choosing an appropriate icon.
16. Click the "Neatline" button on the ArcView GIS 3.2 toolbar to give the layout a border that makes it look neat.
17.Click the "File" menu and choose "Print Setup" to choose your printer and paper size for your map. Click "File" and choose "Print" to print your map.
