Louisiana State University
In the capital city Baton Rouge, Louisiana State University offers bachelor of science, master of science and doctorate programs in geology. The undergraduate program is run through the College of Basic Sciences and offers three areas of concentration: geology, environmental geology and geophysics. Laboratory and field work are emphasized in all concentrations, and a six-week field geology class at the department's field camp in Colorado is required.

University of Louisiana at Lafayette
The largest school in the University of Louisiana system, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette is a research university whose geology department offers bachelor of science and master of science degrees. The undergraduate program emphasizes field work as part of the curriculum, and because Lafayette is the center of Louisiana's oil industry, students have an opportunity to do relevant hands-on work. The department also runs a museum of geology with a large collection of fossils and minerals.

Tulane University
Based in New Orleans, Tulane University offers a bachelor of science degree in geology through the department of earth and environmental sciences in the School of Science and Engineering. The department also offers master's and Ph.D degrees, as well as a minor in geology. Field work and research are emphasized. A field camp course, typically taken during the summer after junior year, is required to fulfill the capstone for the undergraduate geology degree.
