Louisiana offers many educational opportunities to future nurses with both Associate and Bachelor's degree programs available. Nursing colleges are located across the state, allowing residents to choose a school nearby without the need to relocate. Louisiana has had a severe nursing shortage for many years, especially in hospital and long-term care settings, made only worse by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. These shortfalls are expected to become worse as baby boomers retire, making the need for new nurses even greater.
