Petroleum engineering is the discipline of studying subsurface activities dealing with the production of hydrocarbon compounds from crude oil and natural gas. This discipline is part of the hydrocarbon production, different than the refinement and distribution process.
Drilling
Petroleum engineers are responsible for finding ways to extract crude oil and gas from underground reservoirs. Drilling creates tunnels and uses pipes to pull the fuel upward.
Producing
Producing is the process of extracting oil and gas from pockets under pressure. Petroleum engineers will use alternative means to pull the oil and gas out.
Degrees
Most engineering students can take basic engineering classes before moving into more specific disciplines like geology, well drilling and petroleum production. With a bachelors in petroleum engineering, your entry level job may be office work before moving out into the field.
Specialization
Some specialized fields include geologists, geophysicists, facility engineers, safety engineers, chemical engineers and petroleum accountants.
SPE
The Society of Petroleum Engineers is an organization that collects and exchanges technical knowledge on the exploration and production of crude oil and natural gas resources. They also provide career opportunities.
