The college experience can be gained by high school students over the summer.
Attending a summer program at the University of Southern California (USC) is a great way to spend summer for any high school student. Not only will you experience many aspects of college life, but you are likely to give yourself an academic edge when it comes to applying to colleges after high school. Science Camp for High School Women
This seven-day program provides campers with hands-on experience in oceanography and marine biology. Campers learn about and participate in educational activities like studying the geology of Catalina Island (which includes a trip to the island), plankton investigations and fish pressing. Recreational activities like kayaking, volleyball and swimming are included. Campers must be women entering the 9th, 10th, or 11th grade. As of 2010, the cost for the week is $1,800, which includes room, board, tuition and transportation to Catalina.
Summer Seminars
Summer seminars allow high school students to earn three college credits by attending a four-week college course in a particular area of study. Students are fully immersed in challenging course-work accompanied by academic support from professors and other faculty. There are 18 different seminars offered, which include exploring entrepreneurship, future physicians and playwriting. A single seminar requires six to seven lecture hours per day. Students may attend only one seminar per summer. Activities like karaoke nights and a trip to Disneyland are available to students each Friday and Saturday. Seminars range in price from around $4,000 to $6,500.
Summer Certificates
USC also offers a summer program to high school students that earns them a certificate in a particular area of study upon completion. The certificate programs are two weeks in length and are offered architecture and visual communication. Students enrolled in the program live on campus and see what it is like to live on a college campus. Extra-curricular activities are offered throughout the duration of the program. As of 2010, the cost of tuition, room and board for summer certificate programs is about $3,500.
