The university has several laboratories and centers specifically related to ocean engineering, including the hydromechanics laboratory, ocean engineering wave tank, Haynes coastal engineering laboratory, offshore technology research center and the center for dredging studies. University of Rhode Island
The College of Engineering at the University of Rhode Island (URI) includes the Department of Ocean Engineering. URI offers bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees in ocean engineering. The department itself is located at the Narragansett Bay campus. URI was the first university in the country to offer a graduate program in ocean engineering, and its program is considered one of the best in the world. Much of the research being produced from the department has garnered international recognition, a few examples being the scuba diving rebreather device, ability to harness wave power and climate studies.
Florida Institute of Technology
The Florida Institute of Technology offers bachelor's, master's and doctorate programs in ocean engineering within the engineering school. Beside classes and research, Florida Tech prepares its students for solving those real-world problems. The program has five different concentrations: underwater technology, marine corrosion and marine materials, Naval architecture, hydrographic engineering and coastal engineering. The undergraduate program requires 135 completed credits in mathematics, engineering and science. The graduate program can be completed part time or full time. Florida Tech is near Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution, the Disney Complex, NASA's Kennedy Space center, Harris Corporation and Hubbs Sea World Research Institute. Therefore, the university collaborates with some of the top oceanography institutes in the world.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
The center for ocean engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is located in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Ocean engineering research focuses on marine acoustics, hydronamics, smart sensors, marine exploration, marine robotics, ocean systems management and ship design and technology. The center is funded by government and industry to meet any current and future ocean engineering needs.
