Spot A Hellbender

Many people would not want to spot a Hellbender. With its very large size and its ugly and intimidating appearance, the Hellbender is a salamander that most people don't wish to meet. However, if you want to spot or identify this amazing creature in the wild, follow these steps.

Instructions

1. Find Hellbenders in the Appalachian Mountain region in the eastern United States. Hellbenders live near the Susquehanna River in New York, southward to the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland. They also live southwestward from the east coast over toward southern Illinois and extreme northeastern Mississippi. Also, find the Hellbender in parts of Kansas, Missouri, Georgia and Alabama.

2. Look for the Hellbender in its preferred habitat. Hellbenders are aquatic creatures that spend all of their time in the water. They like to live in fast flowing rivers and larger streams. They also like to live near large rocks that they use for shelter. Because of poor stream quality in their range, you can most easily find Hellbenders in mountain streams and rivers.

3. Marvel at the size of this very large salamander. The Hellbender measures between 12 and 29 inches in length making it the largest salamander in the Americas. Males and females are similar in size.

4. Observe the Hellbender's appearance. Hellbenders usually have dull gray upper parts, but the upper parts may also have a blackish, brownish or yellowish color. Their underparts are often a pale gray. Hellbenders may also have some irregular spots on their bodies. They have flattened heads and short legs, and they are very slimy to the touch. Adult Hellbenders have no external gills.
