Start A Jewelry Design Business

Some jewelry designers can easily markup their designs for 100% or more. With dedication, creativity and superb business and marketing plans, an initial capital investment of $500 to $1,000 could result in annual earnings of $25,000 to $75,000. The price of each item is set by the designer, distributors and retail store owners. Depending on the type of materials used, prices will range from $50 to $75 for custom jewelry. However, diamond, gold, silver or platinum jewelry items are sold for hundreds or even thousands of dollars.


Instructions


1. Decide what type jewelry you will make. Many types of jewelry exist. Costume, beaded, gold diamond, silver and pearl are possible options. Pinpointing a specialty is important. This will allow you to create things that appeal to your customers. For instance, if you sell gold jewelry, it is unlikely that your customers would show interest in your costume jewelry.


2. Develop skills. Contact community colleges, art schools and craft supply stores. Inquire about upcoming jewelry making classes. Consider taking an online jewelry course. Purchasing a jewelry making book or DVD and following step by step directions is another option.


3. Contact distributor. Jewelry distributors sell finished products. Your jewelry will be sold to retailers at wholesale prices. Some manufactures choose to distribute their town products. However, this will require advertising the products in various wholesale publications.


4. Visit jewelry trade shows. Locate jewelry making supplies, tools and services are often displayed. Attending a jewelry trade shows allow you to see demonstrations of products prior to purchasing.


5. Get Geological Institute of America(GIA) certificate. This organization is the world's leading authority in diamonds, colored stones and pearls. Having a GIA certificate indicates that you have been properly educated in gem grading and identification. GIA certification can be obtained by attending a classes on campus or online.
