Trace A Skype Message

Do not block the user before you have traced their location.

Skype offers voice, video and text messaging between computers and devices connected to its VoIP network. Although you can block and report users who send you inappropriate messages or unauthorized communications, you may first want to trace the location of the contact to confirm who they are. Using the Command Prompt on your computer, you can determine the IP address of the Skype user that sent you a message, then use the IP address to determine their physical location.

Instructions

1. Click the "Start" button on your desktop and type "cmd" into the "Search" box. Press the "Enter" key on your keyboard and the Command Prompt window will launch.

2. Open Skype by double-clicking its icon on the desktop. Click the "Recent" button in the upper right corner of the window to display a list of recently received messages, including the one you want to trace.

3. Right-click the contact you want to trace in the "Recent" list and select "Call" from the context menu. Wait for the contact to answer the call. The call must be answered before you can trace the IP address.

4. Type "netstat-nb" into the Command Prompt window and press "Enter" when the contact answers your Skype call. You do not need to speak to them.

5. Take note of series of numbers -- the IP address -- next to the "Skype" entry in the Command Prompt window. You can now end the Skype call.

6. Navigate to an IP address tracing service in your computer's Web browser, such as Network Tools, Web IP Address or What Is My IP Address. Enter the IP address recorded from the Command Prompt window during the Skype call. The tracing service will give you a geographical location for the IP address, tracing the Skype message.
