Geology Camps For Kids

Studying geology helps kids learn about the land they live in.

When children learn about geology, the study of the Earth's surface and substructure, they begin to understand the world's physical processes such as what causes a volcanic eruption. Classroom lessons are important, but taking them to a geology camp where they can perform hands-on experiments is more likely to leave a lasting impression with them.

Weis Museum Summer Geology Camps for Kids

The Weis Earth Science Museum holds a children's geology camp at the University of Wisconsin-Fox Valley every summer. The camps run for one week and includes three different levels of fun and learning; Earth Explorer, Earth Investigator and Earth Citizen.

In the Earth Explorer level, children learn geology basics. They build casts of fossils and grow crystals.

In the Earth Investigator level, children learn how geologists explore different topics including weather patterns, dinosaur bones and water.

In the Earth Citizen level, youngsters are shown how geology interacts with society in today's world.

The price is $125 per child, and includes a camp shirt, snacks, materials and a special certificate after completion of all levels.

The Placer Nature Center

The Placer Nature Center offers a summer day camp, "Geology Rocks!" Children ages 6 to 12 use tools to learn about the different layers of Earth, and go on an actual geology dig adventure.

At the end of the week, children will know what igneous rocks are, why volcanoes erupt and earthquakes occur and why farming is an important aspect in our ecological system.

The camp is priced at $85 for one week per child, and $75 per child if you are a member of the Placer Nature Center.
