Colorado statutes recognize title companies, lawyers and landmen under mineral rights law.
Landmen negotiate to buy or sell mineral rights for mineral or oil companies. Their services include contract negotiation for exploration and development of minerals or petroleum. They also ensure compliance with governmental regulations. An associate landman is a person who works in the industry, under a person who holds a certificate as a professional landman. No certification exists for associate landmen.
State licensure is not required to obtain a landman certificate.
The American Association of Professional Landmen certifies a qualified applicant to become a registered landman, registered professional landman or certified professional landman. These certificates are an industry standard and are recognized under Colorado law.
Instructions
Become Registered Landman
1. Maintain an active membership in the American Association of Professional Landmen. This requires a college degree in an American Association of Professional Landmen-approved school or four years of land experience.
2. Obtain employment as a landman.
3. Obtain one certified professional landman or one registered professional landman as a sponsor.
4. Submit a completed application.
5. Pass a take-home exam. You are now qualified for a registered landman certificate.
Become Registered Professional Landman
6. Obtain five or more credit years of full-time work experience as a land professional. One year of work equals one-half credit year of experience. (Note: A bachelor's degree is not a requirement for this certificate, but a bachelor's, graduate, law degree or multiple degrees can substitute for some of the experience.)
7. Work in land negotiations for four consecutive years immediately preceding submission of your application.
8. Pass the American Association of Professional Landmen Registered Professional Landman exam. A passing score is 70 or better on all parts of the test.
9. Maintain active membership in the American Association of Professional Landmen for at least one year immediately preceding submission of your application.
10. Obtain the sponsorship of at least three certified professional landmen. You are now entitled to certification as a registered professional landman.
Become a Certified Professional Landman
11. Maintain an active membership in the American Association of Professional Landmen.
12. Meet experience and educational requirements: Gain at least seven years of landman experience and earn a four-year college degree or higher. The experience requirement can be reduced to five years with additional approved education.
13. Work as a landman for two years immediately prior to submission of an application to become a certified professional landman.
14. Submit a completed application with the sponsorship of three or more certified professional landmen.
15. Attend the American Association of Professional Landmen Oil and Gas Land program.
16. Pass the association's comprehensive exam. You are now entitled to certification as a Certified Professional Landman.
