Construct A Volcano Science Project

Volcano projects provide a visual aid for students.

Volcano science projects are used to measure a student's understanding of the principal parts of a volcano. In addition, science volcano projects provide students with a visual aid in preparing for a test. Constructing a volcano for a project can be done using paper or molding clay, however, for a professional look, use molding clay. In addition, by molding a volcano, users can add decorative details, such as snow and rocks.

Instructions

1. Mold the volcano. Using molding clay, construct the circular base of the volcano. Use your hands to create a flat, circular base, then shape and construct a cone. Start by forming a round cylinder, using your hands to rotate the clay. Mold the top into a V-shape for a cone. Continue adding layers of clay to the triangle until the volcano reaches the desired size.

2. Carve out a crater for the lava to spill out from. Use a cutting knife to construct a crater big enough to hold a 35mm film container. Remove the extra clay.

3. Decorate the volcano. Using acrylic paints, add color and environmental features to the volcano. Paint the entire volcano a solid color using a filbert brush; a filbert brush is ideal for painting large areas. Paint in one direction to avoid paint streaks. Allow the coat to dry. Add details to the volcano, such as snow, using paint. Use a round-tip brush to apply details. Add any rocks, toy trees or painted rivers surrounding the volcano.

4. Place the 35mm film container inside the volcano crater. Take a regular tablespoon and add two tablespoons of baking soda into the container. Add a tablespoon of dishwasher soap. Place five drops of yellow or orange food coloring. Cover the film container using the film cover.

5. Use a marker to label the visible parts of a volcano -- conduit, crater, base, country rock and throat.

6. Add vinegar to erupt the volcano. Please note, adding vinegar will cause baking soda and soap to react in a chemical explosion. Add vinegar in an area away from carpet, as the food color will stain the fabric.
