Located in the heart of Texas along the edge of the Hill Country, this small Texas town is surrounded by hills, prairies and several state parks. It is also home to the National Museum of the Pacific War.

Enchanted Rock State Natural Area

Located 16 miles north of Fredericksburg, Enchanted Rock State Natural Area covers 1,643.5 acres. The park is listed as a National Natural Landmark and is listed with the National Register of Historic Places. Although the park has only been open since 1984, humans have been visiting the area for more than 11,000 years. The rock is a huge pink granite dome that stands 435 feet above the ground and covers 640 acres. The Tonkawa Indians believed that ghost fires flickered at the top of the dome. The park offers primitive backpacking, camping, hiking, technical and rock climbing, picnicking, geological study, bird watching and star gazing. Camping areas are both primitive and walk-in and tent camping is the only type of camping allowed in the park, RVs are not allowed. The amenities that the park offers are restrooms with showers, picnic tables, fire rings, day use areas and a group pavilion. The park does have a tendency to fill quickly so it is best to call ahead.
