The study of petroleum and its uses is one area that can be supported by a scholarship for a geoscience degree.
With even one-year postgraduate courses accumulating fees of several thousand pounds, the cost of studying for a master's degree in the field of geosciences can be very high, especially when living costs are factored in. Though some students are able to pay their way with savings, other students apply for scholarships which cover the cost of tuition, fees and sometimes other expenses. Generally, these scholarships are given out to the most outstanding students at any given institution.
NERC
The National Environment Research Council (NERC) aims to promote cutting-edge research in science and focuses on supporting work in the areas of biodiversity and climate change. Each year, it offers a number of scholarships to students attending universities across the U.K. whose courses fall into fields relating to the environment; postgraduate students undertaking a master's of science in petroleum geosciences at the University of Manchester, for example, are eligible, as are geoscience students at Newcastle University.
NERC scholarships consist of bursaries toward tuition, fees and living costs, including fieldwork costs. Each year, the NERC contributes money to about 1,400 students undertaking PhD or master's degrees in science courses.

ChevronTexaco
Energy company Chevron is committed to the continuing education of students all around the world and offers financial support for students undertaking courses in areas such as geoscience and engineering. Each year, the ChevronTexaco scholarship is available for two graduate students in the U.K., and the competition for these slots is fierce. The scholarship provides for the student the full tuition and fees for the course and also a substantial contribution towards living costs.
Typical courses whose students are eligible for the ChevronTexaco scholarship include the University of Leeds master's of science in exploration geophysics.

PESGB
The Petroleum Society of Great Britain (PESGB) was set up back in 1964 and exists to educate the public about all aspects of petroleum and its exploration. As a result, the society is committed to supporting student research and training in the field, offering scholarships at a number of universities. Students with a provisional place to study a master's or similar degree in geosciences at a U.K. university, as long as the degree relates to petroleum in some way, can apply for the PESGB's scholarship, which consists of a bursary of £10,000 toward the payment of course fees.

The University of Edinburgh
The School of Geosciences at this university is able to contribute toward the funding of several of its PhD students each year. The school requires that the student be able to provide for half of his funds and be able to prove that he can do so in order to qualify for the school's funding.
