Earth science doesn't have to be one-dimensional.
Learning about a country can be made even more fun through the designing of a three-dimensional replica of that country. This 3D map project incorporates numerous subjects such as geology, geography, math and art. Students use math in determining the overall scale of the design, practice art by sculpting the features and painting them, learn to read maps, gain an understanding of geologic forces along with geological terminology. Learning design a country replica provides a new dimension to learning about a country.
Instructions
1. Take a vote among the students to select the country for which they are to design a replica. Have the students select topographical maps of the country. Use online maps and images to view the chosen country from different heights and locations.
Look at close up photos of landforms such as mountains and valleys along with bodies of water. Discuss how they formed.
2. Talk about read topographical maps. Tell the students how color is used to show height such as for a mountain as well as depth when showing bodies of water, such as a lake or river. Take a vote on the color scheme of the replica map.
3. Divide up the country replica into sections, one on which each student can work. Have them construct the physical features with modeling clay. Place the maps and images of the country where they can be seen while the students work on the project.
4. Students label the map with a scale to show how the size of the country compares with the real country landforms and bodies of water. Students indicate on the map the name of the country and a compass rose that is accurately oriented for the real country's location. Students can make labels for landforms and water bodies and place the labels directly on the replica map.
