Free Gps Mapping Programs

Travel with a GPS.

A Global Positioning System, GPS, is guided by a cluster of satellites that orbit the earth. These satellites send signals that allow the users of GPS mapping software to access information that details accurate location and estimated time of arrival of a destination. The information is transformed into visual displays that show topography and road maps. This technology was first created by the U.S. Defense Department and was introduced to the consumer market in the 1990s.

NAVIT

NAVIT is a car navigation software that is designed to show vector maps, display multiple maps simultaneously and to create routing and renderings of a displayed map. This program calculates the best route to your destination, provides directions and has a speech interface that works intuitively with directions. Directions are delivered in more than 20 languages ages such as English, Chinese, Danish and Italian. NAVIT works well with touch screens.

Roadnav

Roadnav can be installed on a Linux, Windows or Mac operating system. This street navigation software uses the Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing files from the U.S. Census Bureau to create maps and data from the United States Geological Survey to pinpoint locations. Roadnav can also provide directions in an audio format by using the Mac OS X built in speech interface. Features include customizable skins, on-screen keyboard and a 3-D driver's perspective for viewing.

EasyGPS

EasyGPS is a Global Positioning System software that interfaces between the user’s computer and a GPS device, such as Garmin, Magellan or Lowrance. EasyGPS has a split screen for viewing. The left side of the screen lists all the physical reference points and the right side of the screen displays the GPS data. Routes and way points can be saved on EasyGPS and printed for later use.
