Barstow is located in the high Mojave Desert.
Barstow, located in southern California, has a long history based on transportation. The original railroads that brought miners in search of silver eventually were expanded into the Santa Fe Railway. With the construction of major highways and the historic Route 66, Barstow's economy continued to expand. Today, tourists come to enjoy the surrounding Mojave desert and see the variety of historical attractions the city has to offer.
Barstow Route 66 Mother Road Museum
The Route 66 Museum offers exhibits and memorabilia about this famous highway.
The Route 66 Mother Road Museum, founded on July 4, 2000, is located in the historic Harvey House in downtown Barstow. The Museum offers a nostalgic look at Route 66 with its collections of artwork, photographs and exhibits. As of August 2010, current exhibits range from commercial photography to watercolors of Route 66. Admission is free and the hours of operation are Friday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Mojave River Valley Museum
Several archaeological findings are on display at the museum.
The Mojave River Valley Museum, founded in 1964, is located right off of Interstate-15. The focus of the museum is to preserve the historical and cultural relevance of the Mojave Desert and its region. The exhibits include Native American artifacts, archaeological findings and historical photos. As of August 2010, admission is free and it is open everyday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Western America Railroad Museum
The museum provides outdoor displays of locomotives and equipment.
The Western America Railroad Museum (WARM), founded in 2001, offers exhibits that focus completely on the history of the Pacific Southwest railroads. The coverage includes machinery, equipment, signals and track maintenance, as well as outdoor displays of locomotives. Hours of operation are Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Desert Discovery Center
Former geologists volunteer their time for educational field trips.
The Desert Discovery Center, provides educational and recreational programs about the Mojave Desert region. It offers field trips with a focus on geology, history and natural science for all ages. Volunteers are trained professionals who guide the learning experiences. Hours of operation are Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
