Make A Crystal Rock

Kids can learn about geology by growing crystals on rocks.

Crystals are a naturally occurring mineral formation that can be found all over the world in a wide variety of colors and sizes. If you are teaching a class in simple geology to children, you can show the kids how they can make a crystals rock to make the curriculum more interesting and exciting. Once the crystal rock is complete, children will be able to see how crystals in the natural world grow and develop.

Instructions

1. Pour 2 cups of granulated sugar into a pot, and fill the pot with 2 cups of water. Heat the pot over medium heat until the mixture bubbles, then remove the solution from the heat.

2. Stir 10 drops of food coloring into the sugar solution, mixing it in well with a spoon. Select any color of food coloring you prefer.

3. Pour the colored sugar solution into a large glass jar. Place a rock into the jar, making sure that the rock is small enough to be completely submerged in the solution.

4. Place the jar into a sunny location and allow it to be undisturbed for one week. After a week, the water should have evaporated from the jar, causing the colored sugar to create large, colorful crystals all over the rock.
