Organizations tend to use the words grant, fellowship, and scholarship interchangeably. Essentially, they are free money given to someone to pursue knowledge or a career. Many grants and scholarships connected to graduate studies abroad are tied to research of a particular area, field or language. There are many more available than those listed here.
Language-Linked Grants and Scholarships
The Language Flagship Fellowship offers financial support to U.S. graduate students participating in the Flagship Program in Arabic, Persian, Korean and Mandarin. The Walter Jensen Fellowship offers $10,000 to citizens holding a B.A. and pursuing a career connected with the French language. The Walter Jensen Scholarship for Study Abroad is a $1,500 grant for graduate and undergraduate students who plan to teach French.
Program-Specific Grants and Scholarships
The East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes provide science and engineering graduate students research experience in Australia, China, Japan, Korea or Taiwan. The award amount is $3,000 plus international travel. Global Health Management awards 10 full-ride nursing scholarships to the Shanghai Institute of Health Sciences International Nursing Program.
Location-Specific Grants
The American Institute of Bangladesh offers $3,000 grants to graduate students pursuing studies of Bangladesh. The American Scandinavian Foundation Fellowship offers $4,000 grants and $20,000 fellowships to support research in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland.
General Grants and Scholarships
The Thomas J. Watson Fellowships gives a one-year grant for a graduate student to travel abroad and work on a project that is "creative, feasible and personally significant." The Rotary Club has three scholarships ranging from $13,000 to $25,000 for study abroad for graduate students as well as undergrads. Fulbright Full Grants awards grants to college graduates to study abroad. The grant includes tuition, travel costs and living expenses.
