Operators help to extract resources using various types of mining machinery.
Mining and drilling operations require a number of different workers to be successful and profitable. These workers help from the start by finding the resources to be extracted and operating the machinery that removes it and supporting the operation with maintenance tasks. These fields will take you into the world of mineral removal or the search for petroleum under the earth's surface.
Geology
Geologists study core samples to determine the location of a resource for mining.
Geologists closely study the makeup, structure and past history of the Earth's crust. They are vital to mining operations as they are able to locate valuable resources such as mineral or petroleum deposits that are used in various industries. Specific work responsibilities include making maps, collecting and interpreting data, writing up reports and make recommendations based on findings. The deposits are located using seismic equipment and taking core samples from the ground.
Engineering
Mining and geological engineers work closely with geologists in locating and planning the mining process. Workers in this field start by doing surveys of the resource's deposits and then seeing if it can be profitably mined. Then they work with the team to determine the best methods and tools to use in mining the resource. Overseeing the operations for mining are also part of their responsibilities. Engineering technicians assist engineers in setting up the mine's structure and working out extract the resource efficiently and safely.
Extraction
Those in this area work with the equipment that is involved in mining construction and that extracts the resource from the ground. A continuous-mining machine operator is responsible for handling the machine that cuts into the mineral, coal or other resource in the ground and then puts it on a conveyor. These people operate the machine either in the cab of the vehicle or remotely from a distance. Longwall-machine operators control the machine that utilizes turning drums for removing resources and conveying them out of the mine.
Drilling
Rotary drill operators oversee the work crew and work the machinery that is involved in maintaining a certain speed and pressure for drilling. The rotary-rig operators supervise the various engines that power the machinery. A derrick operator is responsible for assisting with running pipes down wells. Tey also operate pumps that keep mud moving through different pipes.
