Online Climatology & Meteorology Degrees

Meteorologists learn to predict changes in the weather.

Meteorologists and climatologists study atmospheric science and learn to predict changes in weather patterns based on scientific data. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 15 percent increase in jobs in this field between 2008 and 2018. An online degree in this field could be a stepping stone to a career in this field. The number of schools offering online degrees in this field is fairly limited. Two schools located in the U.S. offer online degrees in the field, while one additional school offers a certificate program.

Oregon State University

The Department of Geosciences at Oregon State University offers an online degree in the field of geography with an option to pursue an emphasis in the field of climate and water science. Students in this degree program complete 21 credit hours in this field of concentration as they complete their bachelor of science degree in the geography field. Courses of study include Introduction to Atmospheric Sciences, Hydrogeology, Applied Climatology, Global Change and Earth Sciences, Man's Impact on Climate and Glacial Geology.

Penn State University

Penn State University offers an online certificate program the field of weather forecasting. Although Penn State does not offer a degree program in the field, the certificate program can be a step in that direction by providing students with foundational knowledge that can be transferred to a school offering a full degree program in climatology or meteorology. The program requires the completion of 12 credit hours in the field. Courses include Understanding Weather Forecasting, Fundamentals of Tropical Forecasting, Fundamentals of Mesoscale Weather Forecasting and Advanced Topics in Weather Forecasting.
