Distance Learning At Georgia University

The University of Georgia offers distance learning through its Independent and Distance Learning (IDL) program administered by the Center for Continuing Education.

Format

IDL courses are self-paced. Students may enroll anytime. They must remain enrolled in the course for at least eight weeks. Students must also complete their course within nine months. Most courses are online, but many are available in print format.

The program offers more than 160 academic credit courses through distance learning in a variety of subjects. Course subjects include accounting, art, economics, English, foods and nutrition, geology, horticulture, music, psychology, religion and women's studies.

Students

Courses are available to almost anyone. You do not need to be admitted to the University of Georgia to enroll in IDL courses. Even a high school or home school student age 16 and over may take IDL courses if she is jointly enrolled in a college or university.

Cost

In 2009, tuition for IDL courses was $203 per semester hour for in-state students and $882 per semester hour for out-of-state students. Students registering online or by fax must pay for courses with a credit card.

Registering

To register for an IDL course, students either complete the online registration form and submit it over the university's secure server, or they print the registration form out and mail or fax it in to the IDL office. Once registered, students receive their materials by either mail or e-mail. To register or for more information, visit http://www.georgiacenter.uga.edu/idl/index.phtml.

Library Resources

The university library offers the UGA Libraries' Distance Learning Service that ensures that distance education students have the same access to library services as on-campus students. They provide a variety of online resources, including online databases and tutorials, and they offer distance access to library materials through interlibrary loan.
