Missouri Fossil Identification

There are several fossils commonly found in Missouri, most of them originating from the Mississippian Epoch of prehistoric time. Knowing some of the fossils found in Missouri can help enhance rock hunting and fossil finding hobbies.

Evactinopora Radiata

Evactinopora Radiata is a small, star-like sea creature that typically measures about one centimeter in size. The Evactinopora Radiata can have anywhere from four to eight arms, resembling the shape of a starfish, but with a more cylindrical body.

Palaeacis Obtusum

Palaeacis Obtusum is a coral-like animal that has many smaller pores and vein-like projections. The ancient coral also has small, round holes or dimple-like carvings in it. The Palaeacis Obtusum is typically about a centimeter long.

Favosites

Favosites is a colonial coral that measures up to six centimeters and has a smooth, white-colored wall. A cross-section of the coral resembles the honeycomb of a beehive and a whole portion of the coral has narrow tubes, which housed the coral-dwelling animals.
