Download Trails To Garmin

Garmin supplies free software which you can use to manage trail maps on your computer and then download them to one of its Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers. You can use the software to install maps, survey the terrain and plan your route. Trail maps come in regular topographic and also high level, comparable to 1:24,000 scale United States Geological Survey (USGS) maps.

Instructions

1. Install the free MapSource software on your computer from the website (see References). Download the file into a directory on your computer. Change to the directory where you downloaded the file and run the file by clicking on it. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation.

2. Purchase the map at the Garmin website (see References).

3. Connect your Garmin to your computer with the supplied cable.

4. Select the map you want to send to the Garmin.

5. Click the Map tool; it's a little map icon. Move the mouse to highlight a region. Click with the mouse to select the region.

6. Transfer the map to the Garmin. Make sure you have enough memory for the map selection on the Garmin, then check the Maps Tab to see how much memory your selected region needs.

7. Make sure the selection you want to send shows up on the left side of the MapSource window.

8. Click "Send to Device." And then "Send." MapSource will begin downloading the trail map to your GPS.

9. Disconnect the GPS and verify the trail map is installed.
