Southern Utah Lake Camping And Fishing For Kids

Lake Powell features many places for your young angler to catch a fish.

Southern Utah is a fisherman's paradise offering catches ranging from native cutthroat to walleye and bass. Utah Division of Wildlife Resources posts "hot" fishing spots, hoping to fulfill dreams of mouth-watering fresh fish for dinner. Lake campgrounds welcome overnight guests as well, inviting your family to rough it sleeping in a tent or enjoy the luxuries in your RV. Pack up the kids, fishing poles and camping gear, spending a few days enjoying the outdoors at one of Southern Utah's premier lakes.

Lake Powell

No trip to Southern Utah is complete without visiting Lake Powell, the United States' second largest man-made reservoir. Two campgrounds are situated within the boundaries of Lake Powell's Utah side. Bullfrog Marina features 24 pull-through spots, accommodating RVs up to 50 feet long. Your kids will especially enjoy attending the nightly amphitheater program focusing on geology, wildlife and history of the Ancestral Pueblo Native Americans. Hall's Crossing is reached by ferry from Bullfrog Marina and offers 24 RV spaces, along with 78 campsites. Memorial Day weekend kicks off the summer fishing season, prime time for both boaters and shore fishermen. Whether your kids are hoping to snag a smallmouth bass or cast their fly rods reeling in their first rainbow trout of the season, fishing near both campgrounds presents plenty of angler opportunities.

Southwest Utah State Parks

Southwest Utah boasts mild winter temperatures permitting state park campgrounds to stay open year-round. Three picture-perfect state parks lie just north of St. George offering clear blue reservoirs, surrounded by red sandstone cliffs. Take the camper and watch as your little ones cast for crappie, catfish and largemouth bass. Journey on the Old Spanish Trail to Gunlock State Park or venture east across Highway 15 to Quail Creek State Park. San Hollow State Park provides a smooth pad for your RV, along with modern restrooms and full hookups.

Trout Infested Waters

If your family is looking for trout-infested waters, Baker Dam Recreation Area is the place to head. Located 17 miles north of St. George, Baker Dam features 19 sites minus potable water and electrical hookups. La Sal National Forest, southeast of Moab, contains eight lakes ripe with rainbow, brown, brook and cutthroat trout. While most La Sal lakes offer primitive camping, albeit with vault toilets, tables and grills, any wide spot along the road can be claimed for overnight guests. Pack some warm clothes in the summer months, with most lakes ranging in elevation between 8,000 to 10,000 feet.

Other Prime Spots

Who couldn't catch a fish in a lake called Fish Lake? Located in south central Utah, Fish Lake descends 100 feet at its lowest point and not only contains normal varieties of trout, but yellow perch as well. Because of Fish Lake's 8,400-foot elevation, camping is nestled between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Fish Lake offers camping options for everyone including two RV parks with full hookups and five campgrounds used for trailers and tents. While you may consider yourself an excellent fly fishermen, hiring a guide to help you and the kids lure a trophy-size trout is well worth the money. Although you don't need a guide to fish Boulder Mountain's 80 small lakes, guided fly-fishing trips practically guarantee an elusive catch on one of these quiet lakes. Dixie National Forest, home to Boulder Mountain not only contains unlimited camping options, but is a quiet refuge away from the crowds.
