Most Remote Beaches In The U S

Secluded beaches offer beauty and solitude

For many people, crowded beach resorts are a small price to pay for the luxury of getting away from urban noise and chaos, but for the enterprising traveler who craves isolation and quiet, a little research can unearth a number of remote beaches in the U.S. These beaches are often accessible by only one road and feature white sands, clear ocean water and sometimes even wild horses.

Carova Beach

Carova Beach is located in Outer Banks, N.C. One of its distinguishing characteristics is the lack of paved roads leading to the beach. Accessing Carova Beach requires a sport utility vehicle, as the only path to the beach is through dirt roads. Visitors to Carova Beach can see wild horses, descended from shipwrecked Spanish mustangs, grazing on the sand dunes.

Bowman's Beach

Located 25 miles southwest of Fort Myers, Fla., Bowman's Beach is part of the Sanibel Island beaches. To access this remote beach, visitors must leave their cars at a designated parking lot and walk a quarter mile. Bowman's Beach features some of the best shelling in the U.S., but visitors are advised to bring their own food and drink as amenities are scarce, although barbecue grills are available.

Jasper Beach

Jasper Beach in Machiasport, Maine, is a gravel beach abutted by freshwater and saltwater lagoons and a salt marsh. The beach is located off Route 92 in Machiasport, under a radar facility. Parking is limited, but visitors who find their way to this remote spot will experience the beauty of the red volcanic rock for which the beach is named. In addition, the beach features glacial deposits and volcanic rocks with quartzite.

Kaihalulu

Kaihalulu, a beach in Maui, Hawaii, also known as Red Sand Beach, is a secluded beach to the south of Hana Bay, in a red cove that resulted from the erosion of a volcanic cone. Kaihalulu is circled by black cliffs and green ironweed trees. Swimming is not advised due to the Pacific ocean's strong currents and heavy surf, and the jagged walls of the cliffs. However, visitors can sunbathe on the beach's unique red sands and admire the rocky lava sea wall, but should be aware there are no lifeguards or facilities available.
