Earth Science Research Projects

Earth science studies how the world works.

Earth science studies the environment, the way the world was formed, and the effects of weather on the land and environment now. It also studies astronomy and the effects of the planets and outer space. An earth science research project should focus on one of these aspects. It can look at past events or how current events are impacting a specific aspect of earth science.

Environmental Issues

Global warming fits into earth science. The project could work to prove or disprove the theory. Research would need to be done on weather trends over the last 100 years. Factors such as the types of air pollution and the effect that it has on weather and heat should be taken into consideration. Part of the research project could address solutions to the global warning problem or ways to deal with the cycles in the Earth's weather.

Ecosystem Changes From Pollution

A research project on the effects of pollution can be done for a school research project. The student can do research on pollution and how it is affecting specific ecosystems around the world. Then he could find an ecosystem near his home and study the plants and animals to see if they are impacted by pollution. He can identify the types of pollution and ways to combat the pollution in the specific ecosystem he studied.

Earthquake Effects and Predictability

Examine the pattern of significant earthquakes worldwide or in a specific region. The student can chart the biggest earthquakes in the last 50 years and research the effect the earthquakes had on changing building laws and the environment. The study can also compare the effects in areas that had strict building codes because of regular earthquakes as compared to areas that did not. Comparing the 2010 7.0 Haiti earthquake to the 2010 8.8 Chile earthquake and the aftermath may be a good study. The research could also look at patterns and predictability of earthquakes in specific regions. This report should explain the types of earthquakes and what causes earthquakes

Weather and Geology

Earth science studies both the weather and how the Earth was formed. One research project can focus on the effects that weather over time has on specific geological areas. For example, you can focus on how canyons were formed either through a glacier or a river. Another option is to look how wind has affected different areas around the world. The project could be extended to finding ideas on combat soil erosion and other damages that the weather causes.
