One job of a geologist's is researching our planet's past.
Creating geography activities for the classroom will help students to understand their own home and culture along with how it relates to others in a global sense. Geography consists of two main branches: physical and human that naturally creates interdisciplinary activities. Physical geologists investigate the history of earth by studying materials such as oil, metals and rocks. Human geologists research how people perceive and interact with their environment.
Globe Activity
Create a worksheet with that has an outline of the world with a list of places for the students to locate, such as countries, cities, rivers or mountains. Have students work in groups or individually, or distribute as homework, to locate the places on a globe. Once they locate an area, have them write the name on the proper area of the world outline worksheet.
Internet
Explore geography with images and videos by accessing the Internet. Students will be able to zoom in on mountains, cities and oceans. Have students research facts and interesting information on different geography sites and how the local people interact with their environment such as building tall buildings, parks and outdoor activities like skiing. Have them write a report on the differences in locations such as mountains regions versus a desert region.
Pen Pals
Today's classes are connecting with other classes across the globe. Have your class setup a pen pal class from another country to discuss different geography information. Create collaborative projects such as sharing pictures of different landmarks and weather conditions.
Weather
Join or create your own weather project. After teaching about weather conditions in different regions in the world, have the students research and keep track of their local weather such as rainfall, the difference in morning and afternoon temperatures and how accurate their local weather person is. Have students research how the weather affects the earth such as flooding and slides.
Careers in Geography
Have students research and write a report on different careers in geography such as economic, environmental, education and technology. For older students have them research the job outlook and salaries and create a PowerPoint presentation for the class that includes details such as job descriptions, the potential of future jobs, salaries and whether they would have to relocate to gain employment.
